Oracle PL/SQL - How to embed an apostrophe inside a string in dynamic sql

I was asked to make some enhancements to an existing .Net Application that uses an Oracle database.
Most of the logic used by the application resides in the database in packages. These packages make use of loads of dynamic sql.

So one of the issues encountered was having a list of branch descriptions built up on the fly. The problem was that some branch descriptions had an apostrophe in the description thereby terminating the string and breaking the dynamic sql.

So the branch description variable was something like this...   'Test store 1, Test store 2,Test store's'
"Test Store's" was breaking the dynamic sql  because of the apostrophe.

The solution without having to double on apostrophes is to use User Defined Delimeters...
q'(Test store 1, Test store 2,Test store's)'

Start the literal with "q" to mark your delimiter, and surround your delimited expression with single quotes is basically what is happening above. The user defined delimiter is the round bracket, so everything in between round brackets is taken as is.

Videos in E-commerce stores

E-commerce Video

Video is slowly starting to replace product photographs in  e-commerce stores and websites.
Video has the added benefit of improving SEO programs and social media campaigns. Research is showing that customers spend more time watching videos of products than browsing through product catalogues.

Google analysts have found that Google shows a preference to videos that are viewed for longer periods than a few seconds in it search rankings.

More e-commerce stores will replace their static images with videos in 2013 as this media has proved to be more engaging with customers.

Does my business need an app?

The amount of time users spend on apps is growing. In fact the amount of time users spend on apps has actually outgrown time spent on the web.

So does your business need an app? The fact is that most businesses only need an HTML responsive website built with a mobile first mind set. These websites are designed to cater for mobile applications in terms of size and ease of use and can easily be extended for full desk top web use cutting the costs needed for building them.

The next time you re-design your website consider asking for a mobile website that can be extended to a PC website thereby allowing you to extend your website's reach to both the mobile and desktop worlds.

Using Skype To Assist Your Business

Most of us use Skype to make free voice calls and to make use of video chat. Skype is awesome for this but their is so much more you can use Skype for... Especially for small businesses.

Skype has a wonderful video conference facility. This will save you time and money as you can use Skype Video Conference instead of traveling to meet business partners.
Free Skype to Skype calls also come in handy when calling suppliers and clients.
Instead of paying for a toll free number for clients to contact you on why not add a Skype button to your website for clients to get hold of you free of charge to them and to you.

Need to demo a new product or power point presentation to clients use Skype's "share your screen facility".
In other words when on a video call with a client Skype allows you to share your computer screen with them i.e. they will be able to see your screen as if they were sitting in front of it. Works wonderfully when you want to show off a new website, conduct a presentation or demonstrate a new product line.

Need to take notes of what was said in a meeting. If you are on a Skype call make use of Skype's record feature which will allow you to play back what was discussed on the Skype call.

All the tips discussed above are free on Skype.

Upgrading an Asp.Net website from version 1.1 of the .Net framework to version 4.0

I recently had to upgrade an asp.net application from version 1.1 of the .Net framework to version 4.0
I opened the vs 2003 application in visual studio 2010 and when prompted to upgrade the frame work to version 4.0. I said yes.

Visual studio did the conversion and these where the issues and fixes  I used on completion of this conversion.
1.'System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings' is obsolete ---  Use Configuration Manager
2.'System.Web.Mail.SmtpMail' is obsolete   ---  Use System.Net.Mail
3.'System.Web.UI.Page.RegisterHiddenField(string, string)' is obsolete  ---  Use ClientScriptManager.Regist...
4. The state information is invalid for this page and might be corrupted          Add to pages section of web.config enableEventValidation="false"

Another issue I had was  that the application made use of Crystal Reports and these did not work after the framework as upgraded.
The fix here was to install Crystal for Visual Studio 2010 (CRRuntime_64bit_13_0_1).
Then reopen the application in visual studio 2010. It will now ask you if you want to convert the solution for crystal for vs2010 -- Say Yes.

Hope this helps someone.

Does my business need a blog?

This is the question a lot of business owners have asked themselves. According to the research the answer is a resounding YES! The reason is because blogs have a number of benefits that businesses cant do without. Blogs drive traffic to your website, they help you get new clients, they help you communicate with existing clients, they help you promote your business and they assist you in terms of search engine optimisation.

How do blogs assist with Search Engine Optimisation?
Search Engines give preference to websites that remain fresh i.e. websites that are constantly publishing new content. If your blog is integrated with your website your blogs will assist in this respect.
When you are writing your blogs you can also use the keywords that you know your clients will use when searching for you in search engines. Creating links on these keywords and linking back to pages within your site are also a big bonus in terms of improving your search engine rankings.

How do blogs increase traffic to your website?
Firstly because blogs increase your search engine ranking they will as a result increase traffic to your site. More importantly though blogs create interest in your site because there will always be something new.
The trick is to keep your blogs light, interesting and short.

How do blogs help you communicate with your clients?
You can use your blogs to promote new items you are selling, new promotions you are running and anything of interest you want to convey to your clients. The nice thing about blogs is that you can also allow your customers to communicate with you by commenting on your blogs.

If you are interested in creating a blog to integrate with your website feel free to contact me.
